A new creator’s guild aims to protect online content creators

Content creation is work, but in such a rapidly shifting social media landscape, creators face an uphill battle fighting for fair pay and ownership of their content — typically without any institutional support. The Creators Guild of America (CGA) wants to change that.

The CGA, which launched last week, describes itself as a “professional service organization” instead of a labor union. It won’t act as a collective bargaining unit or authorize strikes, but it does offer benefits that are “similar to those offered by unions,” according to its site. The nonprofit group seeks to back creators with the benefits that workers in more traditional professions also enjoy, like providing networking events and working with brands and studios to advocate for fair pay. 🔗Read more

Insider seeking nominations for rising star influencers in the US and UK

The rise of influencer marketing hasn't shown many signs of slowing down.

A recent survey by creator-focused marketing platform CreatorIQ found 67% of brands increased their influencer-marketing budgets in 2023 compared to the previous year, in spite of increased scrutiny of marketing budgets overall.

2023 has also seen its fair share of massive changes in social media — from the launch of Instagram's new app Threads, to the rebranding of Twitter, and new monetization programs on platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.

As the landscape continues to grow and shift, Insider is seeking nominations for its inaugural list of rising stars in influencer marketing. Nominees must have at least five years of experience in the creator economy or in influencer marketing, be based out of the US or the UK, and have contributed to their role in a meaningful manner, as determined by Insider's team. 🔗Submit your nominations

Meta’s considering a new subscription offering which would enable EU users to eliminate in-stream ads

Mark Zuckerberg has long maintained that Facebook will always remain a free service, but as E.U. regulations evolve, potentially further restricting the company’s capacity to gather user data for ad targeting, maybe now is the time for Meta to re-evaluate that foundational concept.

According to a new report from The New York Times, that is indeed now in play, with Meta reportedly weighing the potential of offering paid versions of both Facebook and Instagram, which would enable E.U. users to avoid ads, and personal data usage, entirely in both apps. 🔗Read more

Is anyone actually using threads? Users sink to 10m in August

Meta's Threads social network has experienced a staggering 79% drop in daily active users within just one month, according to data from Similarweb. After initially surging to over 49 million daily users on July 7, the platform's numbers plummeted to a mere 10 million by August 7. Users who remained on Threads also decreased their average daily time spent on the app from around 14 minutes to just three minutes, raising questions about the platform's ability to retain its user base amidst growing competition in the social media landscape. 🔗Read more
