Instagram’s confusing comms saga reaches conclusion

I was not expecting to be writing on the C-I-G-C saga this quickly when I closed last week’s edition on the latest comms hiccups Instagram’s team were having to creators thanks to a sequence of confusing and contradictory advice. But alas, the confusion has been quite prevalent that the PR team have chucked Instagram chief Adam Mosseri into a Colin and Sam interview to get things straight. I would recommend the hour and a half interview for some passive listening, but in the meantime, here’s your snapshot lowdown:

👉"Sends" (how many people share your post with a friend) is the most important factor for post reach whilst likes and watch time also play a smaller part. This aligns with the shift towards private sharing on social media.

👉Instagram is focusing on video content but still trying to emphasize sharing behaviors.

👉The algorithm now prioritizes showing users content from accounts they don't follow, because people don't follow enough profiles or the right ones.

👉Short-form video is more favorable for Instagram because it allows for more connection with friends compared to longer content.

👉Mosseri suggests that content shared with one friend or a group chat tends to be "healthier" than content shared publicly. This could be a way to promote more positive content.

👉Instagram is working to improve its monetization systems for creators, with a focus on smaller creators.

👉Meta is prioritizing creators over publishers because power is shifting towards individuals.

Mosseri is concerned about the potential for more social media platforms to be banned in different regions.

👎YouTube is making a big change to how videos look on desktop for paying subscribers, putting titles and comments on the side and recommendations below, but so far people aren't liking it.

YouTube is trying out a new feature that automatically groups comments on Shorts clips by topic, making it easier to find interesting discussions.
